Welcome to SPLCSummerHill.org the web site for St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Summer Hill Road in Auburn, PA. Before there was a nation, there was a church on Summer Hill. From an era of travel on horseback or in a buggy to a time of travel at the speed of sound when men have walked upon the moon - during all of these generations the faithful have gathered on Summer Hill to give praise to Almighty God for His care and guidance In 1767 application was made to the British Government for the ground on which the church now stands. By that time, Christians of both the Lutheran and Reformed backgrounds had seen the need to erect a house of worship in the area. Finally, on December 17, 1817, a deed was granted to the trustees of the Lutheran Congregation which stated that "this tract of land shall remain in the hands of the Lutheran trustees and congregation forever and ever. " Between these two date several important events had occurred. In March 1782 Christians of the Lutheran and Reformed faith met to discuss the possibility of forming a union congregation and erecting a house of worship. In 1784 the Lutherans declared themselves to be a Lutheran congregation with association with the Ministerium of Pennsylvania. In the year 1788 the union church building was completed - the first church - in which both Lutheran and Reformed congregations gathered for worship. The church - a log building - was replace in 1804 by a second church building. A third church building was began and completed in the year 1847, and with periodic repair and remodeling lasted until, on December 13, 1958, it was destroyed by fire. Out of the ashes of this building emerged two buildings, St. Paul's Lutheran Church and St. Paul's United Church of Christ. After one-hundred-seventy-six years the partnership of Lutheran and reform in one building came to an end although a spirit of friendship and cooperation continues to exist between the congregation. On June 5, 1960 ground was broken for the present building which was dedicated one year later. Significant Events in the Life of St. Paul's. We hope that you find this web page both informative and useful.
